For tonight only, Coco Solid’s new zine-book, PHILOSOFLYGIRL – Volume 2, is available for sale at Fresh Gallery Otara for only $10! Coco Solid is an artist in the Fresh Gallery Otara 6th anniversary exhibition, WWJD curated by Ema Tavola. The show opens tonight and runs until 23 June.

These beautiful images were made at ASB Polyfest on Saturday 17 March. Photographer Vinesh Kumaran and curator Ema Tavola set out to photograph the hair styles of 66 young people. The images will be part of the exhibition, WWJD at Fresh Gallery Otara, marking the Gallery’s 66th exhibition and its 6th anniversary!

The SCORPIONS FOR LIFE mural project is an exciting initiative to take the Pacific Arts Summit to the sports field! On Saturday 5 May, as part of the notorious Otara Rugby League club’s Gala Day, the entire clubrooms will be painted by local visual artist and tattooist, Joe Lane!
Project Manager and Otara Scorpions Club Secretary, Ioka Magele-Suamasi, has been a vital member of the Fresh Gallery Otara community since its establishment in 2006. In 2009, she wrote her Master of Arts Administration thesis on a mural project undertaken in Ferguson Oaks Reserve, Dawson Road, Otara. The thesis entitled, Public Art Paradigms and Urban Markings in Otara is SOLID READ!

The team from Fresh Gallery Otara will be at the ASB Polyfest tomorrow – Saturday 17 March – photographing some serious hair swag! They are located across from the Niue Stage, in the Auckland Council tents – get snapped and be part of South Auckland Art History! The photographs will be part of the exhibition WWJD celebrating Fresh Gallery Otara’s 6th anniversary!
Co-editors of SOUTH, Nigel Borell and Ema Tavola will be there giving away free copies of the EXCELLENT new publication about Māori and Pacific arts and culture in South Auckland.
Photos will be uploaded throughout the day to the Pacific Arts Summit Facebook page!

In 2009, #TeamFresh set up a make-shift photo studio in a 6×3 meter marquee across from the Niuean Stage at the awesome ASB Polyfest. With Southside photographer, Vinesh Kumaran, we wanted to capture the essence of youth street style. Eight of the 50 portraits made on the day were printed life-size and shown in the Fresh Gallery Otara anniversary exhibition, SOUTH STYLE. A limited edition poster was also produced featuring all the participants from the day. Four of the final eight images also went on to be shown in manu toi; artists as messengers curated by Nigel Borell for the opening of Mangere Arts Centre – Nga Tohu o Uenuku in 2010.
THIS YEAR we’re back! Working again with the excellent Vinesh Kumaran, this Polyfest we will be shooting HAIR STYLES!
The photographs will be used in the exhibition WWJD – the Fresh Gallery Otara 6th anniversary exhibition running from 11 May – 23 June. Each participant will feature in a limited edition poster available from the Gallery during the exhibition. The exhibition will also host South Auckland barbershop, New Flava Barbers for two public programme events where audiences can get art hair cuts in the Gallery!

The Pacific Arts Summit is THREE years old!
This year, the 2012 South Auckland Pacific Arts Summit will be delivered from 4-31 May at venues in Papakura, Manukau, Otara and Mangere.
